Friends and Family Disapprove of Your Girlfriend. What Should You Do?

It can be difficult when your friends or family don’t approve of your new partner. They may not understand why you’ve chosen someone they don’t like, or they may have genuine concerns about your girlfriend that you need to address.

The most important thing is listening to what they say and taking notes.

Perhaps your loved ones see something more than you do in your girlfriend. You may need to ask probing questions to get a clear picture of why they disapprove of your girlfriend. If our family and friends are just old-fashioned in their way of thinking, you will probably alienate them if you continue dating someone they don’t enjoy spending time with.

So you need to make a decision – who is more important? Your loved ones or your new partner?

Your friends may not be thrilled with your new girlfriend because they’re jealous of the attention you give her, because they’ll see less of you, or because they don’t want the group dynamic to change.

Second chance. Instead of sowing negative seeds, try to plant positive ones.

Maybe your girlfriend was nervous as hell when she first met your folks. Ask them for a second meeting and try to plant positive seeds this time. Tell them about the fantastic things your girlfriend has done for you, her new projects, how great she is at her job, how she cooks better than her grandma, or how funny she is. If they can get to know her better, they may come around.

Could you tell them why exactly she makes you happy? Why do you think she is the one for you? This may convince them that this is a good option for you.

It would be best if you remembered that it’s your life. You are responsible for your decisions and the people you choose to surround yourself with. If that means standing up for your girlfriend, then so be it.

They will understand and support your decision if they genuinely love and care about you.

Be prepared to accept the consequences and stand by them regardless of your decision. Remember to be honest and open with your family and friends about why you chose this particular person. Communicating your feelings can go a long way in helping them understand that this is the right decision for you.

You should always follow your heart and go with what is best for you – even if it means going against the wishes of those closest to you. Make sure your decision comes from a place of love rather than defying their opinion out of spite.
